Third Report of UK Health Research Analysis (2014)

The third report of the UK Health Research Analysis is now available to download from the UKCRC  and HRCS websites.

This report builds on the basis from previous analyses in 2004/05 and 2009/10 and has expanded this third volume to include 64 charitable and public funders of medical research in the UK.

As with previous reports, the data relates to a ‘snapshot’ of health research research spend in 2014. However as the third in this series we have the opportunity for assessment of on-going trends in research funding over the ten year reporting period. This highlights from the report include:

  • Research funding continued to increase but rate of growth in 2009/10 has slowed in comparision to 2004/5 to 2009/10.
  • Assessment of research activities show a decrease in basic research (underpinning/aetiology) in favour of translational research (preventation/detection and diagnosis/treatment development). This represents changes in both individual funder strategic planning and response to established policies such as the National Preventation Research Initiative (NPRI).
