A new round of competitive funding offering up to £8 million has been announced as part of the UKCRC Translational Infection Research Initiative. The funds will be made available to establish two new Consortia - multi-disciplinary research groups focused on high quality collaborative work addressing national research priorities in infection.
This is the second round of funding which has brought together the major funders of infection research in the UK in a joint nationwide initiative to boost research in this area. The first round of funding in 2008 resulted in £9m funding for two major infection research Consortia based in London and Oxford. The first round also awarded five Strategy Development Grants.
The UKCRC Translational Infection Research Initiative is a partnership of seven funders aiming to strengthen infection research in the UK. The Partners are: the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council; the Medical Research Council; the National Institute for Health Research; the Health and Social Care Research and Development, Public Health Agency, Northern Ireland; the Chief Scientist Office of the Scottish Government Health Directorates; the Wales Office of Research and Development for Health and Social Care, Welsh Assembly Government; and the Wellcome Trust.
