Joint Funding Initiatives

The UKCRC provides a forum to facilitate coordination between funding bodies in order to address barriers and maximise opportunities in health research in the UK. This approach has led to joint initiatives in public health and microbiology and infectious diseases research.

  • A consortium of funders has established five UKCRC Public Health Research Centres of Excellence designed to increase infrastructure, build academic capacity and promote multi-disciplinary working in public health research.
  • The UKCRC Translational Infection Research Initiative was established by a group of funders to boost research capacity, encourage career development and training and increase research infrastructure in this area.
  • The UKCRC has used Strategic Planning Groups (SPGs) as a successful model for joint strategic planning between multiple funders.
  • A number of other partnerships of funders and research related organisations are involved in similar coordination activities to strengthen specific areas of health research.
