Current UKCRC Patient and Public Involvement Projects
The UKCRC is committed to working with
patients and the public within its own activities and is using a
number of different mechanisms to do so. For example, the UKCRC is
piloting a system for recruiting and supporting patient and public
membership of its advisory groups. This work will be evaluated
in 2008 before the project is extended any further.
UKCRC Patient and Public Involvement
Strategic Plan (2008-11)
In April 2008, the UKCRC Board approved a
three-year
Strategic Plan to provide a framework for the UKCRC’s
future patient and public involvement activities. A UKCRC
Board Subgroup for Patient and Public Involvement has been
established to oversee its implementation. An implementation plan
for 2008/2009 will be finalised in June 2008.
People in Research
People in
Research helps members of the public to make
contact with organisations that want to actively involve them in
clinical research. The idea for this web resource came from
two frequently asked questions: members of the public asking ‘How
can I get involved?’ and research organisations asking ‘How do we
find people who want to get involved?’
A
PowerPoint slide giving an overview of People in Research is
available to download.
Developing the evidence
base
As yet there is little research that
systematically evaluates the impact of patient and public
involvement in research. Networks such as
invoNET and
others are working to address this issue. The UKCRC has drawn
together an
Activities Log of work that is currently going
on in this area.
