Clinical Research Networks in England

Clinical research infrastructure is being delivered in England through the development of Topic Specific, Primary Care and NIHR Comprehensive Clinical Research Networks. These networks are managed by the NIHR Clinical Research Network Coordinating Centre.
Topic Specific Clinical Research Networks
The six Topic Specific Clinical Research Networks provide dedicated research staff and other resources which work with clinical teams in the NHS to increase participation in clinical studies. Networks have been established by the National Institute for Health Research:
- National Cancer Research Network (NCRN)
- Diabetes Research Network (DRN)
- Dementias and Neurodegenerative Diseases Research Network (DeNDRoN)
- Medicines for Children Research Network (MCRN)
- Mental Health Research Network (MHRN)
- Stroke Research Network (SRN)
Each of these networks has formed Clinical Studies Groups. These ensure development of a balanced portfolio of high quality clinical research studies and provide a route through which new studies can be developed.
Primary Care Research Network
A Primary Care Research Network has also been established in England, which works closely with the Topic-Specific and Comprehensive Clinical Research Networks to support research in primary care. The network’s overall aim is to increase patient recruitment and involvement in primary care clinical trials and studies. This network comprises eight Local Research Networks, which geographically cover the whole of England.
National Institute for Health Research Comprehensive Clinical Research Network
The NIHR Comprehensive Clinical Research Network has been established across England. Its purpose is to work with the Topic Specific and Primary Care Research Networks to provide infrastructure support for all disease areas. It ensures that patients and healthcare research professionals from all fields and from all parts of the country can take part in and benefit from clinical research.
