Activities

The UKCRC is working to re-engineer the environment in which clinical research is conducted in the UK. This broad aim is being delivered through five interconnected areas of activity:

  • A UK Clinical Research Network is being established to deliver high quality clinical trials across the UK, early phase experimental medicine research is being strengthened and the use of NHS IT programmes to facilitate clinical research is being examined.
  • An expert research workforce of clinicians, nurses and allied health professionals is being developed to support all aspects of clinical research in the NHS.
  • UKCRC Partners are working together to streamline the regulatory and governance environment in the UK to facilitate high quality clinical research whilst ensuring that the rights, dignity and safety of patients are always protected.
  • The UKCRC has carried out a strategic analysis of clinical research activity in the UK which is being used to inform future research planning. Strategic approaches to public health and infection research funding have also been developed.
  • Making high quality clinical research a core business of the NHS cuts across all areas of UKCRC activity. The UK Health Departments are implementing many of the changes needed to create both individual and institutional incentives for research in the NHS.
