UK Health Research
Analysis
The first national analysis of health research in the
UK
An important part of coordinating research is to have an
accurate picture of current funding patterns. The UKCRC Partners
agreed that the UKCRC Secretariat was uniquely placed to undertake
the task of mapping the UK health research portfolio.

This UK
Health Research Analysis report provides for the first time an
overview of health research in the UK. It shows the distribution of
spending on all types of health research across all areas of health
and disease. The analysis focuses on the directly funded peer
reviewed research of the eleven largest government and charity
organisations funding health research in the UK. It includes
projects, programmes and training awards.
The report provides a breakdown of the combined research portfolio
of the participating funders on different types of research,
ranging from basic to applied, and across different diseases.

Details of funding
within individual areas of health and disease are given, and the
geographical spread of health research investment across the UK is
also provided.
The analysis is a snapshot of the vast majority of government and
charity funded health research which took place in the UK between
1st April 2004 and 31st March 2005.
This was a major undertaking involving the establishment of a
central UKCRC Research Database holding the research portfolios of
the organisations involved. A bespoke health research
classification system has been developed to classify the research
on the Database (see
Health Research
Classification System).

In October 2007, a new
analysis of medium and
smaller sized charities was published. In the future it is
hoped to further widen the analysis by including health
research funded by the pharmaceutical, bioscience and healthcare
industries.
