UKCRC Translational Infection Research
Initiative
A £16.5 million UKCRC Translational Infection Research
Initiative has been set up by seven UKCRC funding partners
following a review by the Microbiology and Infectious Diseases
Research Strategic Planning Group. The specific aims of the group
are to:
- Build on existing strengths
- Boost applied and
translational research
- Foster knowledge-sharing and
collaboration across
multi-disciplinary groups
- Promote training, career development and
leadership
- Support infrastructure
The initiative is providing a direct boost to
research capacity and
infrastructure and establishing new career
development and training programmes, through two
routes:
- Consortium Grants – to support new research
partnerships. The consortia will focus on high quality,
collaborative research targeted at national priority areas. They
will establish new career development and training programmes and
carry out multi-disciplinary research.
- Strategy Development Grants – to develop new
partnerships and improved research bids based on meaningful
strategies and addressing real evidence gaps.
The initiative is organised as a call with two
funding rounds, 18 months apart.
- First round – Four Strategy Development Grants
were awarded in January 2008. Seventeen outline applications for
Consortium funding were reviewed and three full applications
invited, with awards scheduled to be made in June 2008.
- Second round - for Consortia only. Launch will
be in January 2009, and notification of outcomes will be in
November 2009. This gives Strategy Development Grant holders from
the first round the opportunity to apply for full Consortium
funding.
