Coordinating Research Funding
Many different organisations fund health
research in the UK. One of the main goals of the UKCRC is to
develop a coherent approach to funding health related research.
The UKCRC provides a forum to facilitate
coordination between funding bodies in specific areas in order to
address gaps and maximise opportunities in health research in the
UK. There are two elements to this area of work:
Another key step in developing a coherent
approach to funding health related research was to map the current
UK-wide health research portfolio to create an evidence base that
may be used to inform future planning.
To this end, the UKCRC has conducted the first
national analysis of health research in the
UK, which was published in May 2006. In October 2007,
the UKCRC and the Association of Medical Research Charities (AMRC)
followed this up with a similar analysis
of smaller and medium sized charity funding of health research.
Underpinning both these analyses was the
development of a
Health Research Classification System
encompassing research into all areas of health and disease.
